Marathonisi island
Just of the coast of Lagana bay the small uninhabited island of Marathonisi is clearly visible. From a distance the greenness of the rich and lush vegetation predicts one heads towards paradise. The outline of the island resembles the shape of a turtle. Coincidentally the beach of Marathonisi island is also a breading ground for the caretta caretta sea turtle. The island is therefore known as Turtle island.
The island is part of the National Marine Park and is guarded by volunteers to protect the growth of the turtle population. On the back side of the island tall bluffs are raised, with hidden away between these cliffs are some tiny exotic beaches. A boat can be anchored in a cave and one has to swim through a breach to reach a deserted beach.
Due to the remoteness the waters are crystal clear, clean and preserved. Marathonisi is a true pure and unspoiled gem and worth every effort to visit. Recommendable is renting a boat from Porto Koukla and experience a day as Robinson Crusoe.
