Zakynthos town
The capital of the island is simply called Zakynthos town. The town is the commercial and cultural centre of the island with approximately 15.000 inhabitants. Although Zakynthos thrives on tourism, the capitol remains a traditional town where all the locals hang out. The main squares of Saint Marcus and Solomos are the centre of town and an ideal place to have a coffee on one of the many terraces.
From here the long shopping street of Alexandra Roma begins, with many boutiques and brand shops. Way above town, overlooking the town and its busy harbour, resides the ruins of a Venetian fortress called Kastro. The site reflects and shows traces of a rich and colourful history by many different rulers over the centuries.
In 1953 a massive earthquake destroyed almost the entire town, but many buildings were rebuilt as closely to its original to preserve the authentic architecture. It is an ideal spot if one wants a break from buzzing and busy holiday resorts.
