Due to its strategic location in the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos has always been of great important cultural value. The island has actively contributed in the spiritual and artistic development of Greece. Especially during the Venetian rule the arts played a major role in daily life.

Also politically Zakynthos has often taken the lead. During the Independence war the revolution headquarter was based on the island and the national hymn is written by a Zakynthian. Nostalgia and honouring forefathers are embedded in the hearts, minds and feasts of the Zakynthian people.
