In the centre of Zakynthos town the church of saint Dionysios is located. The orthodox cathedral dates from 1708 and even after several devastating earthquakes still stand firm. The interior is grand with surrounding wall paintings and impressive icons, all abundantly varnished in gold and silver. The church is dedicated to the patron saint of the island, Agios Dionysios, whose corps rests in the church since 1717.

Twice a year his remembrance is celebrated by glorious processions while his body is carried out and displaced. Saint Dionysios has performed many miracles, healed the sick and dedicated his life to devotion. Even now his body is considered sacred and possessing powers to cure the diseased.
