Agia Mavra church
The main attraction of the rural village of Macherado is the early 17th century basilica of Agia Mavra, one of the oldest churches of the island. Inside a rich decoration and a fine collection of wall frescoes and Byzantine icons are to be found, with the icon of the holy Mavra as centrepiece.
Next to the main church building is the Venetian belfry of Hypoxanthic, the melodious bells can be heard throughout most parts of Zakynthos. Just a few years ago the church was badly damaged by arson fire, but now it is completely restored and open for public
