In 1953 Zakynthos suffered a severe earthquake which resulted in the total destruction of the islands infrastructure and almost all buildings. Even till today this event is still visible and abandoned houses, hidden away under thick vegetation, are numerous.

On the west side of the plain of Zakynthos, high up on the mountain slope, rests the deserted village of Lagadakia. Silent ancient bell towers stand still between the rubble of broken stones and collapsed walls.

Green grass and moss covers the site and this makes it a surreal soundless place. Here one almost feels the power of the quake and sees the devastation it has created.
