On the Solomos square in Zakynthos town, a classical building holds the post Byzantine museum. The museum has many interesting temporary exhibits. It is best known for their rich collection of various ecclesiastical items, superb carved masterpieces, post Byzantine icons and other religious artefacts. After the devastating earthquake of 1953, many ruined churches and monasteries were dismantled and their ancient wall fresco's, wooden panels and icons moved to this museum.
