Blue Caves
On the northern tip of the island you can find the blue caves. These natural arches and water-caves have been cut out by tides for thousand of years and have created a surreal sea environment. These unique geological wonders are located between just of the small port of Agios Nikolaos.
The caves are famous for their bright and deep azure colour of the water; these are most striking with at sunset or sunrise. Once under the water, the darkness in many of the caves seems to be interrupted by some rays of light that dye the waters with turquoise shades, creating an imposing effect. The caves are deep enough to shelter small vessels and you could sail through the arches.
It is an unforgettable experience to swim, snorkel or dive. Especially with an underwater camera beautiful pictures can be made of endless types of blue caused by the sunlight reflecting the crystal clear sea.
