Shipwreck beach
One of the most famous beaches of Greece and certainly the most photographed is “shipwreck beach”. Tucked away between sheer limestone cliffs and due to its inaccessibility this beach is also known as smuggler's cove. On the pure white sand and pebbles, surrounded with clear deep blue waters, rests the wreck of an old smugglers ship.
In 1980 the ship called Panagiotis was making her way from Turkey with a freight of contraband cigarettes. The crew was suspected by authorities, and so the vessel was pursued by the Greek Navy.
Encountering stormy weather, she ran aground in a shallow cove on the north-west coast of Zakynthos, where the crew abandoned ship.
To this day, the boat remains on the beach which is now called "Navagio" (Greek for "shipwreck"). This renowned landmark is the most popular sightseeing destination of the island and is an absolutely must see during your holiday. The strip is only accessible by boat from the nearby harbours of Agios Nikolaos or Porto Vromi.
